131 Bty Reports, Survey/Sound Ranging
June 1968
Op Thoan Thang Phase 11
13. Theatre grid was established at FSB THORNTON (YS 3671) by a single leg tellurometer traverse, with the point of origin at NUI DAT, and then by way of NUI NGHE (YS3972). The traverse was closed by astro and intersection onto a point visible from all stations.
14. Whilst troops were in the area of THORNTON, they provided a protection party to place concrete drums at selected points for calibrations at charge 6 & 7.
15. The method used for fixation of these points was an intersection onto a hovering helicopter over the drums. A base was established with stations at NUI NGHE, NUI DAT and old 1/83rd compound (YS423658). A total base length thus achieved was approx 5000 metres. The aircraft used was a Chinook and the forward rotor blade was laying point. Three runs were made over each point with each run being individually computed. The results obtained differed by an average of 5 metres for eastings and 5 metres for northings. The aircraft hovered over the point at a height of 25 metres.
16. FSB CONCORD (YT 0317), which grouped 104 Fd Bty, B Bty 2/35th Arty and a radar set, was given fixation and orientation from a control point located nearby. A base of three stations was then established by tellurometer traverse in a secure area giving a base length of approx 8000 metres. A Bell Sioux helicopter then hovered over a point at FSB KIAMA (YT 0914), at an approx height of 50 metres and an intersection was done over a group of three runs individually computed. The results achieved were comparable to those in para 15.
17. Prior to this control FSB KIAMA was given orientation by sun observation by a survey pair attached at the initial move. Fixation was by map spot.
UNIT WORKS
18.
a. The sound ranging CP is completed, awaiting equipment.
b. The tower LP in 3 Bn RAR area is completed.
c. LP on NUI DAT has been reconstructed.
d. New LP in 2/35th area under construction. ( LP in 1/83rd compound closed due to moves to abandon that site. )
Conclusion
19. It is requested a study be conducted into the feasibility of the PIM equipment held in Australia being sent to SVN where practical value in its usage can be achieved. The Det hold trained personnel in the operation of the PIM, and there is a definite requirement for the equipment.
20. Could an indication be given of when the Det is likely to receive the Sound Ranging equipment.
